CBD is short for Cannabidiol which like THC is one of the many cannabinoids found in the Cannabis Sativa L. plant. CBD derived from industrial Hemp has a high level of CBD and low level of THC, meaning… numerous benefits without the intoxicating high. CBD works by interacting with the body’s natural homeostasis system [endocannabinoid system] with the aim of restoring physical and mental balance.
CBD comes in many forms including oils or tinctures, edibles, flowers, and topicals. Each of these can be taken or used in various ways including vaping or cooking/food, and used for various issues such as joint pain and acne.
The oil can derive from the Industrial Hemp or Marijuana plant both of which are from the cannabis family. Though related, the chemistry make-up of each is different, yielding different results. The hemp plant is what is legally accepted as the source of CBD due to its low level of THC (<0.3%).
The oil is extracted from the plant through a variety of methods which differ based on company preference and quality goals. The extraction process leaves behind an enriched benefit infused oil that can be taken as drops, added to food or drink, or infused and applied topically.
High quality CBD that follows legal regulations should contain less than <0.3% THC. To ensure the quality of your product seek companies with proof of 3rd party testing. This verifies purity, quality, and level of THC.
Properly regulated,Hemp derived, high quality CBD should have little to no THC ( depending on type of CBD). Oil extracted from the Marijuana plant will have high levels of THC and along with its many health benefits it is best known to be accompanied by an intoxicating high. Hemp derived CBD does have a psychoactive effect and can alter your mindset or mood. It’s feeling can be described as relaxing and non-intoxicating.
Currently drug tests do not test for CBD but rather THC. Products can legally contain <0.3% THC and that small of an amount would be hard to detect. It would be difficult to surpass the legal limit of 50 nanograms/liter of THC even taking high amounts of CBD.
Due to the Farm Bill passed in 2018 it allowed for more widespread cultivation of the Cannabis Sativa L. plant beyond research purposes. It also differentiated the Hemp plant from marijuana (still federally illegal) and defined acceptable THC limits. This opened the door for the market to grow, though there are still many restrictions.
Even though on the federal level CBD has found a place in the health market there are still restrictions on cannabis infused food, and dietary supplements for both humans and animals. Due to these restrictions and the lack of in depth research into CBD and other compounds in the plant some states have their own laws and limitations.
In the state of Michigan CBD oil and topicals are legal, there are still restrictions on CBD food and beverage products sold outside of licensed Cannabis retailers. As of 2020 Out of the 50 states all but 3 ( Idaho, Nebraska, and South Dakota) have some form of CBD legalization.
CBD is a naturally occurring compound found and extracted from the legalized Industrial Hemp plant. The body consists of an endocannabinoid system that works to create homeostasis within other various systems of the body (metabolic, nervous, skeletal).
CBD natural binds with this system so it can assist in leveling out the body, controlling pain and inflammation.
The only reported potential side effects are mild and not life threatening. Symptoms include dry mouth, Nasua, drowsiness/fatigue, and change in mood (not necessarily negative).
Yes, CBD can prevent certain drugs from functioning properly if metabolized by the same enzymes as CBD. If taking other medications consult your doctor prior to trying CBD, and take advantage of our coaching to safely integrate CBD into your current lifestyle.
Dosing is based on your weight and severity of your condition. You could start at the lowest mg/dosage and work your way up until you find a good regimen, but remember to consider the various factors of your lifestyle including other medications and daily tasks.
Some may prefer to take certain CBD products or dosage at different times of the day (ex. Before bed, morning coffee, after work out…) when in doubt seek personalized expert advice through our trained coaches.
